How do you feel about crowds? It's a controversial topic, one that I continually receive feedbak on. I've written a new article on the subject, and posted it on the Forecasting Discussion Group. Feel free to add your comments to this group's posting as well.

Swell Update Jan 23, 2009

Here's the latest on what's going on in the Pacific, and what it means for surf, weather, and winds headed to California.

For swell schedule with size, ETAs, winds and tides, check out my SoCal surf report at WetSand.com.

A few other things I thought worth mentioning...

* I started a new forecasting forum/message board for discussions, posts, etc. You can access the group by clicking here. You can join/post at the group's site; however, if you don't have a GMail account, you can join the group by sending a blank email to:

surf-forecasting-subscribe@googlegroups.com

...and post (or reply to posts) via email to the group (once you join):

surf-forecasting@googlegroups.com

Among the topics are a couple new posts and pages regarding omega and rex blocks. You can see those new pages on the blocking patterns here.

* If you haven't had a chance yet to take the surf survey, I'd really love to hear your feedback. I'm gathering as much data as I can to determine what kind of forecasts/services you'd like, and if I can't provide them here or in my forecasting group, then I'll present this to the new owners of WetSand (Sportnet/WMG). If you'd like to help, you can take the survey by clicking here.

* I added a new Swell Calculator to my WaveCast.com site. This will help in calculating arrival times of a swell, and can be accessed here.

* If you want to be notified when this video blog is updated, just use the "Free Email Report" form at the top right on this page.

That's all for now! Until next time, smile in the line-up, and have a great weekend!

Swell Update Jan 18, 2009

This swell hasn't lived up to model expectations, and although models over did this swell, I admittedly overestimated size in the calculations. Here's a quick video of what's going on right now.

Also, you can check out my latest report on WetSand.com.

As you may know, the owners of WetSand have cut me back to reporting only three times a week, so I've had to take on other work to make up for the loss in pay. This has been a distraction recently. If I had paid more attention on Friday, instead of rushing around to do my other work, I would have better seen that the outer water buoys were off compared to the models. Nevertheless, I don't feel this is a viable excuse, and I apologize for the innacuracy.

Even though WetSand can't pay me for more then 3 reports a week, my hope has been that starting this blog would help fill in the blanks and keep you informed, at no cost to you. I've also provided an email update from this blog, to keep you informed of new reports and posts to this blog. If you'd like to join this free newsletter list, please use the form to the right.

My apologies once again, and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sat. AM update

Just a quick update for Sat. AM. This swell is being delayed by a few hours, but it will build throughout the day. The video in yesterday's blog is still on track, but with delays described in my latest SoCal report on WetSand.com.

Weekend Outlook Jan. 16, 2009

This afternoon long periods are hitting the outerwater buoys, signaling swell for SoCal Saturday, peaking Sunday. More swell then comes through shortly thereafter. Long range models continue to show a change in our weather pattern next week as the WAMs show more swell activity forming in the Western Pacific. Here's a quick video showing what's going on in the Pacific right now, and what this means for surf headed our way.

WNW Swell Update for 1/17 and beyond

That Japan originating swell is moving along, pretty much on schedule, and there's more on the horizon as well. This though boils down to a sweet and sour forecast as conditions could be favorable for weather on the long range -- not the weekend though. Here's a quick video explaining what's going on, and what to expect.

Surf is on the way: ETA 1/17

Models show a nice development of the storm generating the swell for this coming weekend. Here's a video showing how things are shaping up across the Pacific, and what it means for surf and conditions.
