Here's a quick look at what's happening in the Pacific, and a few quick notes on the omega block, as well as angles and what island blockage is all about.

  1. Question: Dallas Raines, Johnny Mountain, etc
    all weatherman names.
So is 'Cool' a made up name?

BTW bought your forecasting book 2 years ago
Mathemically forecasting is simple, but its more
experience and art than I'm willing to invest.
I'd rather read the forecasts and look at the WAMs.

  2. Hey RB: I get asked that a lot. Cool is my real last name. My ancestors came over from the Isle of Man. We think their name hundreds of years ago may have been McCool and that like so many of the immigrants at the time, they dropped the "Mick" to Americanize the name.

Glad you liked the book, and I agree, the forecasting does take a time investment.

  3. please say central coast when showing pics of jalama. its already too crowded. Also try to hype the swells less. I was surfing the ranch and there was 30 guys out at a spot that can only hold 10. everyone was expecting big surf. thanks for the understanding

  4. i concur with anonymous about being discreet in coverage of certain spots. all of us truly dedicated surfers certainly appreciate it. thanks for the consideration.

  5. Hey dg and anonymous: if you are so worried about crowds you should work on your game. Stop whining about discretion just so you can have an unfair advantage. Good surfers always get their waves; they don't need secret spots.

Rock on Nathan! My crew and I will continue to welcome anyone and everyone to the joys of surfing. We relish the challenges of avoiding beginners and embrace the competitive spirit at the expert peaks.

  6. hi rsportel: i think your comment is misplaced for several reasons: 1) you assume i'm working on some kind of 'game,' when really i'm too busy catching waves to care who's counting. i know my place in the line-up and catch my fair share. 2) I agreed with anonymous who asked nathan nicely. I'm not whining about anything; nathan and yourself are free to do as you please. There's a difference between information that one seeks and information that one is given. Research vs. Advertising (btw rincon was firing today with 80% less crowd because of no internet hype)3) you frame yourself as knowing what a good surfer is. i don't doubt that you are, but really, what is your cred? i.e. 'you should' 'unfair advantage' 4) having been around a while, the good surfers that i know don't blog their more out-of-the-way spots with names, maps, etc so they can welcome everybody's 'competitive spirit' at breaks that are not hyped for a reason....you don't seem like you truly understand those reasons, so good luck 'competing' at the real out of the way spots against locals who know the line-ups. I do welcome anybody to surfing, but part of surfing is doing your own research and showing respect for locals. As for Nathan, I think you do a great job, and hopefully you did not take offense to a simple request. Peace.
